Peter Keizer's world is one of childhood memories, like a sunny afternoon in a field of flowers, like a dog running with delight. "Lie down on the grass and look up at the trees: if you have a young mind, you'll see what I've painted," says the Dutch artist, who graduated from the Rijksakademie and the Royal College of Arts over thirty years ago. In his unique work, Peter Keizer uses oil paint directly from the tube, giving a sculptural aspect to his paintings and a pictorial aspect to his sculptures. For his solo show at the gallery, we are very pleased to be exhibiting his recent work, in which nature tends towards abstraction, as well as older works with a naïve, figurative spirit.

  • Peter, what are your sources of inspiration?

Peter, what are your sources of inspiration?

What I find fascinating to observe are the abstractions, rhythms and repetitions of nature. Paradoxically, nature works in cycles, but it is also constantly in transformation. So we never tire of contemplating it, and these moments deserve to be captured in paint. I draw on both my observations and my memories, creating universal scenes that we can all relate to. I also like the cheerfulness that emanates from the subjects I choose, which inspires me a lot.
  • What is your creative process?

    What is your creative process?

First I draw the scene on the canvas, then I paint it. It's an interplay between form and paint in thick and thin layers, where the colours must remain vivid. I work with oil paint because of the depth of colour, the layers and the clean edges that give the paint its unique texture. I then leave the paint to dry, which can take several weeks given the thickness of the layers.

What do you wish to share through your work?

I am looking for an approximate figuration, to suggest rather than to tell. Faces are an excuse for this formal work. For me, the concept appears by itself when the painting has a mirror effect on the viewer.
