No doubt the series generate some controversy due to the subject, as journalist Nate Bodansky asks "do the portraits romaticize or glorify the weapons or are they just a novel take on the subject?”. The Point Blank project shoots handguns in close-up, portrait-style, and straight down the barrel. In doing so, the project creates large-scale, extremely detailed, and uncomfortably in-your-face frontal photographs. These subjects have, quite literally, the power to kill. They began the project in May 2011, and they published a book. The series won an award in the 2013 Communication Arts and applied Arts photography annuals and has been exhibited at Klaus Nienkamper in Toronto. The photos, inspired by similar drawings by artist Robert Longo, are quite jarring, giving the viewer the opportunity to feel what it might be like to have a gun pointed at his head. But the photos also highlight the guns' beautiful geometry and clean engineering. Here in the United States the project might be taken as a political statement, but Andrew says that's not what he, or his art director partners, Derek Blais, are going for.
